Beer is nourishing: for mother and baby.

This poster was printed and distributed in FRANCE between the two World Wars. Yes, in France, the so-called wine country. It says that beer is nourishing for nursing mothers, and it compares a healthy looking nursing mother drinking beer, with an unhealthy looking mother, drinking "something" she made herself. The message is: drinking beer is good for you and your child.
An example of the poster is at the "Beer Museum" in Stenay (France), and the poster was the cover picture of the December 1999 issue of the Brewers Magazine, published by the Confederation of Belgian Brewers.
That issue is almost completely dedicated to the mountain of recent medical studies from all over the world that prove the healthy effects of drinking beer, in moderation, every day.

Recently we could hear on TV, how midwives and doctors in the USA do recommend again nursing mothers to drink beer. Although, they recommended not to drink it just before nursing. Young mothers in Belgium have always known that drinking good, dark abbey ales, like the BORNEM DOUBLE, is very good for them and for their babies. The beer brings much needed vitamin B, disease fighting fyto-oestrogens and flavonoids, and the alcohol is relaxing for the mother. Being relaxed is an absolute must for adequate milk production. With a laugh, it is sometimes said: "No post-natal depression in Belgium with all these good beers!"
