Sour beer is a beer style that is characterized by an intentionally acidic, tart or sour taste. Unlike traditional beer brewing, which is done in a sterile environment to guard against the intrusion of “wild” (indigenous) yeast, sour beers are made by allowing wild yeast strains or bacteria into the brew. The most common beer styles that are soured are Belgian lambics, gueuzes and Flanders red ale. Traditionally, Belgian brewers allow wild yeast to enter the brew naturally through barrel aging. The unique brewing process produces a flavor that seems to explode on the palette, inspiring some fans to call sour beers “the most refreshing beers on the planet.” Flemish sour beers have been gaining momentum in the United States for the past few years.


The Sour Power Sampler includes:

  • (2) Monks Café — This Flemish red sour ale from Brewery Van Steenberge is aged in oak to provide a sour-sweet balance, then refermented in the bottle and keg. (5.5 percent alcohol by volume/ABV)
  • (2) Petrus Aged Pale — Petrus Aged Pale is placed in oak casks with acid bacteria and hops for up to three years after brewing. The oxygen seeping through the oak, along with the influence of the micro-organisms in the wood, cause the beer to sour over time. This Belgian aged pale from Bavik Brewery has 7.3 percent ABV.
  • (2) Petrus Oud Bruin — A Belgian old brown ale brewed by Brewery Bavik that is both sweet and sour. Petrus Oud Bruin is blend of Petrus Aged Pale and a fresh, sweet brew to create this refreshing sour ale. Petrus Oud Bruin contains 5.5 percent ABV.
