Brouwerij Van Steenberge stands as one of Belgium’s most distinctive independent breweries — a house defined by bold, high-fermentation beers that balance intensity with remarkable drinkability.
Known for iconic beers such as Gulden Draak and Piraat, the brewery has earned a global reputation for producing complex yet approachable ales. Central to this identity is its proprietary yeast strain, which imparts a signature depth of flavor and ensures that every beer remains unmistakably its own. This combination of character and consistency places Van Steenberge in a class of its own within Belgian brewing.
While many breweries diversify across styles, Van Steenberge has remained committed to refining the art of top-fermentation. Its portfolio reflects a deep understanding of balance — where richness, fermentation character, and structure come together seamlessly.
This philosophy extends to its historic Flemish red-brown ales, including the renowned Monks Café, a recipe dating back to the brewery’s early years and one of the first widely embraced sour beers in the United States. Across every style, Van Steenberge’s beers are defined by precision, individuality, and a respect for tradition that continues to evolve.
The origins of Brouwerij Van Steenberge date back to 1784, when it was first established as a farm brewery under the name “De Peer” in Ertvelde, Belgium. Like many breweries of its time, it began as a small agricultural operation, gradually evolving into a dedicated brewing enterprise as demand for quality beer grew.
Through generations of family stewardship, the brewery expanded its capabilities while maintaining its independence. A defining moment came in the late 20th century, when Van Steenberge acquired the recipes and yeast from the Augustinian monks of Ghent, ensuring the continuation of a historic brewing tradition and further strengthening its portfolio of specialty ales.
Today, the brewery remains family-owned and forward-looking — combining centuries of heritage with modern brewing innovation. Its commitment to quality, independence, and distinctive character continues to drive its growth, bringing its beers to markets around the world while staying true to its Belgian roots.
