Stiegl stands as one of Austria’s most iconic and enduring breweries — a brand deeply rooted in heritage, regional pride, and uncompromising quality.

Founded in 1492 in the historic city of Salzburg, Stiegl has been brewing at the foothills of the Alps for over five centuries. Its beers are crafted using pristine spring water sourced directly from the Untersberg Mountain, which makes up the majority of every brew, alongside locally grown Austrian hops and grains. This commitment to regional sourcing and natural ingredients is fundamental to the character and consistency of Stiegl’s portfolio.

In a global beer landscape that often prioritizes scale over substance, Stiegl remains dedicated to independence, sustainability, and the enduring traditions of Austrian brewing. Its beers reflect not only technical precision, but a deep connection to place — woven into everyday life across Austria, from alpine trails to ski slopes and beyond.

The History

As Austria’s largest privately owned brewery, Stiegl’s success is inseparably tied to the Kiener family, who have guided the brewery for over a century. Under the leadership of Heinrich Dieter Kiener III, the brewery has grown from a regional operation into a national leader while maintaining its independence and core values.

For more than 500 years, Stiegl has prioritized sustainability, regionalism, and long-term stewardship — supporting local agriculture, creating jobs across Austria, and treating natural resources with respect. This enduring philosophy continues to define the brewery today, ensuring that every beer reflects both its heritage and its responsibility to future generations.
